I've been quiet for a while because I've been writing (songs), reading this month's books (3 of them) and living. I've also been trying to figure out how to make this album release as painless as possible. 3 months ago I shot a music video for the Das Kapital remix of 'Today is the Day'. I kept making promises to upload it but... Nothing happened. Well here is a video explaining my woes.
What's the point of doing this is if I can't have fun? I honestly got so caught up in what wasn't being done, that I forgot that I can ALWAYS DO something about my situation.

Lana
Sometimes you're up. Sometimes you're down. Always keep your head up.
I watched only 1 min of both the songs she performed on SNL. I think it was just nerves. She definitely gave a better performance on Jools Holland *shrug*. I am not a fan, but I think that she will be fine.

More Butterflies
Oh gosh, here we go again. I'm not even going to try and justify my lack of posts. I will move on, as though my previous post was a week ago.
So a while ago I released my second EP 'TheInBetween' which was recorded at the Redbull Studios (here in Cape Town). Well The Manager (Marcee) and I decided to get a remix done of one of the songs. Eventually we decided on one of my favourite DJs. DJ Zinhle: the hottest DJ on and off the turntables. Yessir!!

So the original song (produced by Oltak) was already playlisted in 8 countries and we were ecstatic. All we were hoping for was for the remix to match what the original did. We sent it out to dance radio stations around the world. OMG!! The song is now playlisted in TWENTY COUNTRIES!! I am such a proud mommy. Our baby is a little champion. Butterflies (DJ Zinhle remix) is partly why I have not been updating the blog.
I am part of a 2 woman label, so things that major labels can do in a week takes us a while. Its frustrating, but it is so rewarding.
We are working on releasing the next single. Stay tuned :)

Are you listening
In 2007 I decided that I wanted to write my own songs. I was 24 years of age, couldn't read or write music and had no clue where to start. A girl I studied with told me that her boyfriend had a band and could help me. I was keen so I met him and we clocked. I didn't know what my 'sound' was and he didn't either.
He was part of a rock band (LP Show) and I was raised on jazz, Funk and soul. He would often play me songs already composed or songs that him and his band had recorded and then ditched. He played me a very bare 'beat' and I knew I loved it. 'Are you litsneing' was born and I had found my voice.

V1:
Why do we have to lie?
Why do we run and hide?
You know she saw us, there's no need to hide
She knows about us, there's no no need to cry
I saw this coming, there's no need to lie
I saw this coming, there's no need to lie
There's no need to lie
CHORUS
She won't hear it
You wont say it
I wont have it
Are you listening?
Are you listening?
I wont leave you
Its not over
I wont leave you
She wont hear it
You wont say it
I wont have it
Are you listening?
Are you listening?
Its not over
I wont leave you
Its not over
V2:
She's screaming, make her stop
I'm not leaving
Make her leave
I knew about her, I wont lie
You know you love me, don't you dare lie
she knows it's over, you don't need her
Show me you love me
Throw her out
CHORUS
We recorded a demo and almost 2 years later I recorded it again for my album. It was to be the first single, but radio stations didn't like it. Youth stations said it was too old. AC stations said it was too young. Others said their listeners don't like rock etc etc.
Some radio stations picked it up, but it was never on high rotation. All that being said, I love this track. It will always feel like home to me. Its where I started and discovered myself.
P.S I did this with slip a few days ago. I think I might do this again.

Sia
Every Sunday I'm going to blog about things that inspire me as a musician.
I saw this live performance by Sia a few months ago. I was so impressed, but I had stopped blogging. Now that I am doing it again, I would like to share it.
I loved that she let the theme live beyond the video (see below) and found a way to keep it beautiful live. This woman has an incredibly unique voice & her quirky-ness is also quite endearing. She definitely isn't weird for 'being weird' sake. She appears to be really comfortable with The-Weird.
I love colours, I think people don't get creative enough with colours, the use of colour in the video is simply beautiful. This is honestly the first time I felt like the music was being well represented visually. Often music videos are not an extension of the music itself, but in this case it was a perfect match. I have to hand it to her (pun intended), it is a thing if beauty!
I am inspired. Thank you Sia. :)
